Bulk Custom Shirts and Hoodies: Price Breaks and Lead Times

Ordering custom bulk t shirts for a crew, a team or an event comes down to two questions: how much per shirt, and when will they be here. The answer to both depends on quantity, the print method, the blank you pick and how many colors are in your design. The more shirts you order, the less each one costs, and the price drops in steps rather than a smooth line.
This post explains where those steps are, why they exist, and how to plan a bulk order of custom t shirts, hoodies or sweatshirts so you hit a good price break without buying more than you need. It also covers lead times honestly, because a great price does not help if the shirts show up after the event.
We print shirts and hoodies at our shop in Vancouver, WA for contractors, schools, gyms, restaurants and teams across Clark County and the Portland metro. If you already know your rough count, skip ahead and send it through our quote request. If not, read on.
Where are the price breaks on custom bulk t shirts?
Most shops, ours included, price in tiers. The exact numbers vary by shop and by what is on the shirt, but the tiers tend to land in the same neighborhoods across the industry.
| Quantity | What changes | Best method |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 11 | Full per piece price | DTF |
| 12 to 23 | First real break | DTF |
| 24 to 47 | Screen print opens up | Either |
| 48 to 99 | Setup cost spreads thin | Screen or DTF |
| 100 and up | Lowest per piece | Screen print |
Why do the breaks exist? Setup. Screen printing needs a screen burned for every color in the design, and that setup costs the same whether you print 10 shirts or 500. DTF has almost no setup, so it is the affordable custom t shirt route for small runs, but the per piece cost stays flatter as the count climbs. Somewhere in the two dozen to four dozen range the two methods cross, and above a hundred screen printing usually wins on price for simple designs.
As a broad industry range, a basic one color design on a standard cotton tee often lands somewhere in the low to mid teens per shirt at a dozen, and single digits per shirt once you pass a hundred. Hoodies run roughly double. These are typical ranges, not our price list. Your quote depends on size, quantity and material.
Practical tips to land on a lower tier
- Mix sizes, not designs. Adult small through 2XL of the same shirt and print all count toward one quantity. Three different designs are three different orders.
- Keep the same print on every piece. One left chest logo on a tee and a hoodie can often share a setup. Ask us.
- Round up to the next break. If you need 20, price 24. The extras cost very little and you will want them.
- Fewer colors. Every screen print color adds a setup fee and a bit per shirt. With DTF, full color costs the same as one color, which is why it is the pick for photo and gradient designs.
- Pick one print location. Front only is cheaper than front and back.
DTF or screen print for a bulk order?
DTF stands for direct to film. We print your design onto a special film, coat it with a powder adhesive, and heat press it onto the shirt. It handles any number of colors, fine detail and photos, with no minimums.
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil one color at a time. It is the classic method and the ink soaks into the fabric for a soft, long lasting print. It shines on simple designs at high quantity.
Our rule of thumb: under 24 pieces or more than three colors, go DTF. Over 100 pieces with one to three colors, go screen print. In between, we will quote both and let you pick. The full comparison on feel, durability and cost is in screen print transfers vs DTF.
Which blanks should I pick for bulk custom hoodies and tees?
The blank is the unprinted shirt. It is often half or more of the per piece cost, so it is the biggest lever you have.
- Standard cotton tee. The budget pick. Fine for giveaways and one day events.
- Ring spun or soft style tee. A step up in feel for a small step up in price. The most common pick for staff shirts.
- Heavyweight tee. Thick, boxy, holds its shape. The look most brands want now. Our post on heavyweight hoodies and tees explains why the thick blanks are worth it.
- Standard fleece hoodie. The workhorse for bulk custom sweatshirts and crews.
- Premium fleece hoodie. Heavier, softer, pricier. Good for retail or a team that will wear them all season.
Stock matters too. A popular blank in a common color is usually in a regional warehouse. An odd color in a 3XL may add days to your order.
How long does a bulk order custom t shirt run take?
Lead time has three parts: getting the blanks, approving the proof, and printing. Blanks usually arrive in a few business days if they are in stock nearby. The proof is on you, and the faster you say yes, the faster we start. Printing itself is usually a few business days for a typical order, longer for large counts or multiple locations. Please confirm current turnaround when you quote, since the calendar fills up fast around school kickoff, spring sports and the holidays.
Things that slow an order down:
- Art that is not print ready. A blurry logo from a website has to be rebuilt before anything else happens.
- Size counts that change after the blanks are ordered.
- Out of stock blanks in your color.
- Names and numbers on the back. Each one is a separate piece of art. Our guide to ordering custom team hoodies for a whole roster shows how to collect those cleanly.
Ordering for a Clark County crew or team
A lot of our bulk orders are for roofing and construction crews, landscapers, gym staff and youth teams around Vancouver, Camas, Battle Ground and across the river in Portland. Local pickup means no shipping cost and no box sitting on a porch in the rain, and you can stop by to feel the blanks before you commit to a hundred of them.
For work crews, we usually suggest a dark color blank, a left chest logo on the front and a big back print, because that back print is what the neighbors see while your crew is on a roof or in a yard. See our page on printing for contractors for the full crew kit.

Questions people ask
What is the minimum for bulk custom t shirts?
With DTF there is no minimum. You can order one. Price breaks start around a dozen, and screen printing becomes an option around two dozen. The best per shirt pricing kicks in at 100 or more.
Can I mix shirts and hoodies in one bulk order?
Yes. If the print is the same size and location, the pieces can often share a setup and count toward one quantity tier for the print. The blanks are priced separately, since a hoodie costs more than a tee.
Are affordable custom t shirts going to feel cheap?
Not if you pick the right blank. A ring spun cotton tee costs only a little more than a basic one and feels much better. Spend the savings from a good quantity break on a nicer blank and the shirts will get worn instead of stuffed in a drawer.
Can I reorder a few more later at the same price?
Small reorders are easy with DTF because we keep your art on file. The per piece price follows the reorder quantity, though, so a run of five costs more per shirt than your original fifty. Ordering a few extras up front is usually the better deal.
