Custom Dad Hats: Embroidery, Fit, and Minimums

Custom dad hats are the easiest hat to sell, give away, or hand out to a crew. The low, soft, unstructured shape fits almost everyone, the curved brim looks relaxed, and a small embroidered logo on the front is all it needs. That is why every coffee shop, brewery, gym, and landscaping company seems to have one.
The short version: custom embroidered dad hats usually start around a dozen pieces, the front logo should be small, about 2 to 2.5 inches wide, and a simple design embroiders best. Typical pricing lands in the teens to low twenties per hat depending on the blank and the stitch count, with better pricing as the count goes up.
We embroider dad hats for small brands, shops, and teams across Vancouver, Clark County, and the Portland metro. This guide covers what a dad hat actually is, how to size the logo, what blanks to pick, minimums, and pricing. If you already have a logo, send it over with a rough quantity and we will send a stitched proof and a price.
What is a dad hat, exactly?
A dad hat is a six panel baseball cap with a few specific traits:
- Unstructured crown. No stiff backing in the front panels, so the hat slouches and follows the shape of your head.
- Low profile. The crown sits lower than a structured team cap.
- Pre-curved brim. Usually a gentle curve, not flat.
- Adjustable back. A fabric strap with a metal buckle or slide, sometimes a plastic snap. One size fits most.
- Soft fabric. Most are brushed or washed cotton twill. Some are corduroy or canvas.
That is what separates it from a structured snapback or a fitted cap. If you want to compare across the whole lineup, our post on picking a hat style for your logo walks through flat bills, fitted, flex fit, and adjustable side by side.
How big should the logo be on custom dad hats?
Smaller than you think. The soft front panel of a dad hat does not like a big, dense patch of thread. A large embroidery pulls the fabric and can make the front pucker. It also just looks off. The whole appeal of a dad hat is understated.
| Location | Typical size | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Front center | 2 to 2.5 in wide | Main logo |
| Left side | 1 to 1.5 in | Small mark |
| Back, above strap | 2 to 3 in wide | Wordmark, URL |
Height matters as much as width. Keep the front design under about 2 inches tall so it does not run into the seam at the top or crowd the brim. Many of the best looking dad hats use a simple icon, a short word, or initials on the front and put the full name on the back.
The same thinking applies to other hats, but the limits differ. A structured cap can carry a bigger front logo, which is why team caps tend to go larger. See custom baseball hats for teams for how that side works.
What kind of logo embroiders well?
Embroidery is thread, not ink. It cannot do a smooth fade or a tiny detail. A logo that looks great on a business card may need a simpler version for a hat. Things that work well on custom embroidered dad hats:
- Bold shapes with clean edges
- One to four thread colors
- Text at least a quarter inch tall, in a plain font
- Outlines that are not hairline thin
- Tone on tone, like navy thread on a navy hat, for a subtle look
Things that cause trouble: gradients, photos, very small text, and lots of tiny isolated dots. If your logo has those, we will suggest a simplified hat version. Before we stitch, we send a proof that shows the design as embroidery, so you can see how it will land. If you have a design that only works as a full color print, a different hat style with a printed patch may be a better fit. Just ask.
Your logo file also needs to be set up for stitching. This is called digitizing. It is a one time step that turns your art into a stitch file the machine can follow. There is usually a small one time fee for it, and after that reorders use the same file.
Which blank should you pick?
Dad hat blanks look alike from a distance, but the feel and the fit vary a lot. Here is what to think about.
- Fabric. Washed cotton twill is the classic soft, broken in feel. Brushed twill is a little crisper. Corduroy and canvas are popular for fall and winter and look great with tone on tone thread.
- Closure. A metal buckle with a tuck in strap looks the most premium. A plastic snap is cheaper and works fine for giveaways.
- Crown height. True low profile hats sit close to the head. Some blanks are a touch taller and fit bigger heads better. Ask us if your crew has a mix.
- Colors. Black, navy, khaki, stone, and olive are the safe bets. Washed pastels are big with brands selling to a younger crowd.
- Price tier. Budget blanks are fine for a one time event. For something you plan to sell, step up to a mid tier blank. The strap hardware and the stitching on the panels are where cheap ones show it.
We can bring in a sample of a blank before the full run so you can feel it. For a brand that wants a hat that is a little trendier than the plain dad hat, our post on custom rope hats covers the other style everyone is asking for.
What are the minimums for custom embroidered dad hats?
Embroidery has a setup step, so very small orders cost more per piece. Most shops, ours included, like to start around 12 hats for a standard order. That spreads the digitizing and setup across enough pieces that the per hat price makes sense.
A few notes on how minimums work in practice:
- You can usually mix hat colors within one order as long as the logo and thread colors stay the same.
- Changing thread colors for a different hat color is often fine and sometimes a small extra charge.
- Reorders are easier because the digitizing is done. Ask about a lower reorder minimum.
- Need just a couple of hats? Ask anyway. We will tell you honestly whether it makes sense or whether a small batch is the better move.
How much do custom dad hats cost?
As a typical industry range, embroidered dad hats often land in the teens per hat at a dozen or two, and come down from there as the count climbs toward 50 and 100 pieces. A premium blank, a second location like the back or side, or a very dense design will push the price up. A simple one color front logo on a mid tier blank keeps it down.
Expect a one time digitizing fee for a new logo, usually a modest flat charge. Your quote depends on size, quantity, and material, so the fastest way to get a real number is to send the logo, the count, and the blank color you want.
Turnaround is usually a few business days to a couple of weeks depending on blank availability and the queue. Confirm when you quote, especially before a launch or an event.
Dad hats for brands and crews in Vancouver and Portland
We see three groups order dad hats most around here. Small brands and shops selling merch at the counter. Contractors and landscapers who want a hat the crew will actually wear off the job. And breweries, gyms, and studios building a little lifestyle line.
Our weather plays a part too. A soft cotton dad hat is fine from May through September. For the other seven months, a lot of local brands add a corduroy or waxed canvas version in the same logo. Same digitized file, different blank, and it sells through the grey season. If you are building a merch set, pair the hat with a hoodie from our heavyweight hoodies and tees post and you have a two piece lineup that looks like a real brand.
Local pickup is available at our Vancouver shop, and we ship anywhere. Gyms and studios can see more apparel options on our printing for gyms and fitness studios page.

Questions people ask
Can you print on dad hats instead of embroidering?
Embroidery is the standard for dad hats because the soft, curved front is hard to press flat. For a full color design, a printed or woven patch sewn or pressed onto the front is the usual workaround. Ask and we will suggest the best route for your art.
Will an embroidered dad hat hold up in the wash?
Yes. Embroidery is thread stitched through the fabric, so it lasts as long as the hat does. Hand wash or spot clean the hat and let it air dry to keep the shape of the brim.
Can I put a design on the back or side too?
Yes. The back above the strap and the left side are both common second spots. Each extra location adds a bit to the per hat price. A small URL or wordmark on the back is a popular choice.
Do you have a minimum for reorders?
Reorders are easier because your logo is already digitized. The minimum is often lower than the first run. Ask us when you are ready and we will tell you what we can do.
What do you need from me to get a quote?
Your logo file, ideally a vector file or a large clean PNG, the number of hats, and the hat color you have in mind. From there we send a proof and a price. If you are not sure about the blank, say so and we will suggest a couple.
